Strategy for Building Google Page Rank
~ This was posted on February 23, 2009
For those that are not familiar with Page Rank (PR), it is a score from 1-10 of a webpage indexed by Google. Page Rank determines the value of a webpage and the higher your PR the more value your webpage is in Google’s eyes. To view your PR you need to download the Google Toolbar. PR and the relevance of your site to the search term play an important role in determining your search ranking on Google. If you and your competitor have the same relevance search term and you have higher PR then your competitor, your webpage will be displayed first and will get much of the traffic going into your website.
PageRank is determined by the number and quality of links pointing to your website. The more quality links pointing to your site the higher your PR becomes. The following are types of linking:
Internal Linking:
- Linking to internal pages within the site. Internal linking does not play a role in increasing your PR but instead to share PR among your other pages. Your primary page which is the main page will always have a higher PR and will be diluted at each level like the image bellow.
External Links: This can be inbound links, outbound links and reciprocal links.
- Inbound Links: These are one way links linking to you from other sites. These types of links will votes to your site and will increase Page Rank. Inbound links could be created through links going to your site from article directories, social media networks, and blogs. These are one way links linking to you from other sites. - Outbound Links: Links going to another website. This type of linking has no advantage since you are giving your vote away and not receiving anything in return. Linking to sites that are known to use black hat technique like link farming will get penalized in reduction of PR. A site with PR0 is usually a penalized site and should stay away.
- Reciprocal Links: A mutual link between two sites; “I link to you, you link to me” type of deal. This type of linking is usually done between similar sites and will not benefit as much as inbound links but can greatly increase traffic and site keyword relevancy if anchor text is used correctly.
